Whitney Elizabeth Houston was born into a musical family on August 9th, 1963, in Newark New Jersey the daughter of gospel singer Cissy Houston (nee Emily Lee Drinkard) and John Russell Houston Jr. as well as a cousin of the singing sensation Dionne Warwick. Whitney's mother and her began to sing professionally together at the New Hope Baptist Church of Newark in the year Whitney was just 15 years old. They performed the back vocals for Chaka Khan's track from 1978 Im Every Woman. Later, she provided backing vocals to Lou Rawls & Jermaine jackson as well as her mom. The quality of her work as the featured vocalist of New York funk group Material was noticed by big record companies, like Arista and Arista, which she signed in 1982 and was with them for the rest of her career. The album she released as her debut Whitney Houston was released in 1985 and became the biggest-selling album of an artist who was a rookie. Many hit songs, including the hit songs Saving All My Love For You How Do I know You Give Good Love as well as The Greatest Love of All were released on the album. They set her up for a Beatles-beating seven consecutive US numbers one. The album was sold out of 3 million copies in its initial year in the US and then went on to sell 25 million worldwide winning her the first of her six Grammys. The Whitney album released in 1987 which featured the songs that I Wanna Dance With Somebody and Where Do Broken Hearts Get to, continued her success. But it is The Bodyguard of 1992 that made her one of the biggest-selling artists in history. Although the film and the performances of the actress were not highly praised, the soundtrack album with her version of Dolly Parton's I Will Always Love You was the top-selling single and album for several months. It sold more than 44 million copies around the world. It was also in 1993 that she was married to Bobby Brown, an ex-New Edition singer and father of her only child Bobbi Kristina Brown.
